An Interactive Tutorial

Here is an example of a typical interactive tutorial. In this case, students can observe the relation between the formant peaks in a short-term spectrum and the corresponding formants in a spectrogram. The student selects the peak-formant combination by clicking the mouse on one of the phrases, "4th Formant," "3rd Formant," etc. The phrase selected appears in red ("2nd Formant"). A display appears with comments giving details, such as the formant frequency, for each combination selected.

In this case, the student has asked for information on the second formant. The corresponding peak on the spectrum and dark band on the spectrogram are automatically highlighted and accompanying comments displayed. Information on the third and fourth formants can be obtained in the same way. This tutorial occupies one screen of the course and is preceded and followed by other interactive tutorial screens on the same topic. In general, tutorial sequences begin with simple cases, such as a vowel in which the formants are easily visible, and then progress to more complex ones, such as vowels in which the first and second formants are close in frequency.
