Introduction to HeLPS Demos

The demonstrations presented here were all made with HeLPS. They are intended to illustrate some key features of hearing loss, hearing aids and cochlear implants for students and professionals in hearing science and audiology. Professionals, in turn, may wish to use them in demonstrations to lay persons, including patients and their families.

The audio signals used in the demonstrations are delivered as uncompressed .wav files. As a result, file sizes range up to several hundred Kbytes. If you do not have a broadband (fast) internet connection, the downloading process will be painfully slow.

HeLPS simulations are designed to be presented over calibrated headphones. The separation of the ears provided by headphones allows different hearing losses and aid/implant configurations to be implemented for the left and right ears; headphones also allows spatial effects to be simulated. However, in order to allow reproduction by loudspeakers, and to keep file size as small as possible, the demonstrations given here all simulate bilaterally-symmetric hearing losses and aids/implants with no spatial factors involved. The files contain single-channel signals, which will be played identically from the two channels of your computer’s sound card.

It is important that you adjust the output gain (volume control) of your audio system prior to entering the actual demo pages. Instructions are given for how to do this.

These demos are offered without restriction for non-commercial use only.

Important: These demos require Apple QuickTime. If you don't have QuickTime installed, click here to download it from Apple's website.
